Walk My Way

“Let us love, not just with words or speech, but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

This week, Lobethal Lutheran School officially launched our Walk My Way journey with Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS). Over recent weeks, our students have been learning about the people, culture and communities of Nepal, but more importantly, they have been learning what it means to walk alongside others with compassion, empathy and understanding.

Rather than simply reading facts or watching videos, our learners experienced a series of rich learning provocations designed to help them step into another person’s world. Some carried buckets of water and considered what it might be like to collect the water their family needed each day. Others entered classrooms transformed to resemble the aftermath of an earthquake and reflected on how it might feel if everything familiar suddenly changed. These experiences helped our students move beyond sympathy and begin to develop genuine empathy, understanding not only the challenges people face, but also the resilience and strength they show every day.

This is powerful learning. Great education is not about memorising information. It is about making connections, asking questions, understanding different perspectives and growing in our capacity to care about others. When students can see the world through someone else’s eyes, learning becomes meaningful and transformative.

Our visit from Celia at ALWS brought these lessons to life. Students heard the story of Gita, a mother in Nepal whose life changed through education, training and opportunity. What struck many students was that lasting change often begins with something small: a seed, a skill, a helping hand or someone willing to walk alongside another person. They were enthralled by Celia’s passion and convicted to make a difference.

That’s what makes ALWS such a special organisation. ALWS doesn’t simply provide aid. It works in partnership with communities, helping people access education, improve food security, develop livelihoods, prepare for disasters and create brighter futures for their families. Their work is grounded in dignity, hope and a belief that every person deserves the opportunity to flourish.

Projects like Walk My Way are also part of what makes Lutheran schools so special. They connect faith, learning and service in authentic ways. They help children understand that being a follower of Jesus is not simply about what we believe, but how we live. They show students that faith is active, practical and focused on serving others.

At Lobethal Lutheran School, we want to grow more than successful learners. We want to grow young people who care deeply, think thoughtfully and act courageously. We want students who recognise injustice, who value every person, and who understand they have the ability to make a difference in the world.

As our students prepare to walk, they are discovering that small actions really do matter. A single step may seem insignificant, but together those steps can help provide clean water, education, food security and opportunities for families across the world. Just as Jesus spoke of the mustard seed that grows into something much larger than anyone could imagine, small acts of generosity can create extraordinary change.

Walk My Way is about much more than fundraising. It is about forming hearts. It is about helping children understand that they are part of a bigger story. It is about learning to love, not just with words, but with actions and in truth.
