Honouring the Women Who Came Before Us, Empowering the Women Who Will Follow

On International Women’s Day, I take a moment to reflect on the remarkable women who have shaped my leadership journey and the privilege I now have to guide and inspire the next generation. As a female leader in education, I stand on the shoulders of the women who came before me – women who paved the way so that leadership opportunities for women are no longer the exception, but the expectation.

Acknowledging Those Who Led Before Us

Recently, I had the privilege of meeting with a now-retired principal who shared her experiences of stepping into school leadership at a time when female principals were a rarity. She spoke about how, when she was first appointed, it was seen as a significant moment – a breakthrough in a space traditionally dominated by men. Her story gave me a deep appreciation for how far we have come. Today, I have many female principals among my peers, but her journey remains a powerful reminder that the opportunities we now take for granted were hard won by those who led the way.

The Women Who Shaped My Journey

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work under and alongside extraordinary female leaders who have not only inspired me but have also influenced the way I lead.

At the beginning of my leadership journey, I was mentored by a principal of a small school whose unwavering belief in me gave me the confidence to pursue leadership myself. She taught me that the size of a school does not define the significance of its leadership – what matters is the impact we have on the people within it and to listen when the call of vocation is crying.

During my time at Mildura, I worked under an amazing principal whose wisdom and decisiveness left a lasting impression. She often told me, “Do it now.” Those three words became a guiding principle – reminding me to act with confidence, seize opportunities, and trust in my ability to make a difference. She showed me that great leadership is not about waiting for the perfect moment but about making the most of the moment we are in.

In my current professional journey, I have the privilege of being mentored by an incredible woman who not only founded a school but continues to share her wisdom and insight with those she guides. Her vision, resilience, and strategic thinking have been invaluable to me, reinforcing that leadership is about fostering a culture of growth, embracing challenges, and never losing sight of the bigger picture.

The Next Generation of Leaders

Beyond my mentors and colleagues, I am continually inspired by the students I have the privilege of leading. The young women in my school community are intelligent, compassionate, and full of potential. They remind me daily of the importance of fostering confidence, resilience, and ambition in the next generation. Their determination to challenge the world around them reaffirm the significance of strong, visible female leadership.

Honouring Women in Leadership

On this International Women’s Day, I celebrate the women who have shaped my career – the mentors who have encouraged me, the colleagues who have inspired me, and the students who remind me why this work matters. Leadership is not defined by position or title but by the way that we serve others. I am deeply grateful for the women who have influenced my journey, and I am honoured to play a role in empowering others.

To all women in leadership, in education, and beyond – your influence is immeasurable. May we continue to uplift, empower, and shape the future for those who will follow in our footsteps.

Happy International Women’s Day.
