There’s something incredibly special about watching a child take their first steps – wobbly, uncertain, yet filled with wonder and courage. At Lobethal Lutheran School, we’re privileged to witness those first steps not just at home, but as children begin their journey into school life.
Our Little Acorns : First Steps to Foundation program was born from the belief that starting school shouldn’t feel like a leap into the unknown. It should feel like a natural, gentle progression – a series of small, supported steps that build confidence, connection, and a lifelong love of learning.
Little Acorns: First Steps to Foundation is a new way of approaching school transition programs, offering Foundation students the opportunity to attend school one day a fortnight for six months to a year before officially starting school. This gradual introduction allows children to build familiarity with the school environment, form connections with teachers and peers, and develop the confidence needed for a smooth transition into full time schooling.

Why “Little Acorns”?
The name wasn’t chosen by accident. Just as an acorn holds the potential to grow into a strong, majestic oak, every child carries within them the seeds of greatness – curiosity, creativity, resilience. But for that potential to flourish, it needs the right environment: nurturing, consistent, and filled with opportunities to explore, fail, succeed, and try again.
Little Acorns is more than just a name; it’s a philosophy.
Our beautiful oak tree that stands by our entrance welcoming families to our school, planted in honour of founding Teacher O’Grote in 1971 is a physical manifestation of our beliefs.

The Heart Behind Little Acorns
When we reflected on the traditional “orientation day” model, we realised something was missing. One or two brief visits to a new environment might help with surface level familiarity, but they don’t build the deep connections that ease anxiety and spark genuine excitement for learning.
So, we asked ourselves: What if starting school didn’t feel like starting over? What if it felt like coming home?
That’s the heart of Little Acorns. It’s not about cramming school readiness into a handful of rushed sessions. It’s about creating a gentle, consistent rhythm that allows children to:
- Build relationships with teachers and future classmates
- Explore their new environment in a way that feels safe and familiar
- Develop foundational skills through play, discovery, and guided learning
- Feel seen, known, and valued before they even walk through the school gates on day one

A Program Built on Connection, Not Just Curriculum
While literacy and numeracy are important – and a focus for us at Lobethal Lutheran, the true foundation for school success is emotional security. That’s why Little Acorns focuses on:
- Belonging: Creating a sense of community where children feel safe, valued, and included
- Confidence: Helping children feel capable, curious, and ready to take on new challenges
- Resilience: Teaching strategies to manage big feelings, solve problems, and bounce back from setbacks
We do this through play-based learning, structured learning experiences, and plenty of opportunities for children to explore at their own pace. There’s no rush, no pressure – just the space and support to grow.
Why Does This Matter?
Because starting school isn’t just an academic milestone – it’s an holistic one.
- For children, it’s about stepping into a new world filled with unfamiliar routines, expectations, and faces.
- For parents, it’s about letting go, trusting others to care for and guide their child.
Both journeys are significant. Both deserve care, attention, and support.
Children who’ve participate in the program walk into Foundation with familiar faces to greet them, confidence in their new environment, and skills they’ve practiced over time. They’re not starting from scratch – they’re building on what they already know and feel.
Real Growth Takes Time – and That’s Okay
One of the things I love most about Little Acorns is that it embraces the idea that growth isn’t linear. Some days, a child might walk in full of excitement; the next, they might need extra reassurance. That’s not a setback – it’s part of the process.
Real growth is messy, beautiful, and rarely happens on a fixed timeline.
We’ve seen children who barely speak go on to confidently to lead play. We’ve watched hesitant little hands reach out to new friends. We’ve heard parents say, “I can’t believe how much more confident they are!”
And that’s the magic of Little Acorns. It’s not about rushing to the next milestone. It’s about planting seeds, nurturing them with care, and trusting that, in time, they’ll grow into something strong and beautiful.
There’s no better way to sum up the magic of Little Acorns than through the words of our families:
“He had the best time! He came home so happy and excited for the next session! 🥰”
“He had a great time! Excellent idea 😊”
“She had a great day! She came home very happy (although exhausted) and is excited for next time 🥰”
From the joy on their faces to the excitement they bring home, it’s clear that these first steps into school life are filled with wonder, confidence, and connection. Little Acorns is more than just a transition program – it’s a journey of growth, belonging, and the beginning of a lifelong love of learning.
