When you’re not a regular churchgoer, Sunday is the best day of the week. The phrase “Sunday funday” exists for a reason and most likely wasn’t coined by Christians. Sunday becomes the day for fishing, relaxing, watching football, and catching up on sleep. Pretty much everybody has Sunday off so it becomes the de facto day to get together and do fun stuff.
Here’s what a lot of people probably don’t understand (I know I didn’t). When you’re a devout churchgoer, Sunday is still the best day of the week. However, now it’s been transformed to offer you much more than a day on the lake or an opportunity to sleep in.
Sunday is transformed from “fun day” to Lord’s day (not that it isn’t fun anymore). Communion with Christ, worshiping God, and fellowshipping with your Christian family becomes the thing you look forward to at the beginning of every week.
At one point in my life, I remember thinking that people who would spend their Sunday going to church were wasting time. I mean, be religious if you want to, but why would you devote a whole day off of work and school for something so boring, inconsequential, and ultimately deluded?
Thankfully, I came to discover that Sundays in Christ are anything but. When you realize that you were created to worship the awesome God who has given you so much and that your Christian family is worth spending every second with, the whole spending Sunday going to church thing starts to make sense.
This Sunday, for me, was a perfect Sunday. I spent the day worshiping God, preaching His word, sharing food, stories, and life with my brothers and sisters in Christ, and relaxing with my wonderful wife. Some might call it boring or a waste of time, but I call it a perfect Sunday.
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!
Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!
For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, And his faithfulness to all generations (Psalm 100 ESV).
