We have been talking about the Commonwealth Games in school – it is always nice to enagage students in current events, it makes the learning relevant, more authentic and thus leads to greater retention. I took the opportunity to use the Commonwealth Games to teach students about Ordinalzahlen – ordinal numbers.
We held races between toy cars and scribed who was erste, zweite or dreite. We then held a whole class race with a set of flicking frosch – frogs – the winners of which we ordered 1-20. This active, relevant learning was fun for the class and the physical element put a ‘signpost’ in their brain about the topic.
To engage kinaesthetic learners we then made medals out of glittery salt dough – very fun – this sensory experience would assist students in once again creating a mental ‘signpost’ about ordinal numbers.

I also recently took utilised the World Cup to discuss sports with students – we played Fußball games using the parachute and created our own Fußball men – they are wunderbar!!
